WILSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING MINUTES OF 17 NOVEMBER 2009
Members in attendance: LaJuana and Norm Leus, Ray and Heidi Porter, Shirley and John Grammer, Viola and Otto Henke, Tambria Read,
Al and Janice Pruitt, Frank and Elsie Hayden, Ralph and Mary Ann Gerhardt, Nancy and Paul Traeger, Al and Elaine Kolodzey, Maureen Liles, Lois Wallson, Melba Dunn and of course Carl Ray.
President Harry Grove was unable to attend this evening’s meeting, leaving the group in the very capable hands of Vice President
LaJuana Leus who called the meeting to order. Norm Leus led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and a heartfelt opening prayer was delivered by Carl Ray.
Secretary Ray Porter distributed copies of the minutes from last month’s meeting to all members. A motion was made and
seconded to accept the minutes as published.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Roy Munro passed out copies of the financial report. As always, his
organized and detailed report clearly showed the transactions and balances of each account. Most notable was the great news that the Wilson County News reported they have donated free advertising to the WHCS
valued at $727! Roy also politely reminded all members that if they have not paid their membership dues, it’s time: $30 for a family or $20 per person.
Jailhouse Museum: Louis
Thurman and Ralph Gerhardt both provided updated status on the Jailhouse. As always, they are looking for folks to help out. It seems someone has been going into the museum. Ralph coordinated with
the County (Ray Wolf) who is willing to pay for the replacement of all of the locks. The new locks will have keys that cannot be duplicated except by a locksmith. A motioned was made and carried that
there will be only 6 keys made and they will controlled by the museum directors. Ralph bought 17 picture frames to reframe the items that are currently on the floor. Being thrifty, Ralph got them
on sale for the low, low price of only $169. LaJuana suggested that the Jail House folks have a standing amount that they can spend for items without group approval. A motion was made by Otto Henke that
a $500 limit be set. The motion was seconded and quickly passed by the group. Ralph is working on getting a Wilson County map from 1867, which will be a great addition to the Jail House. Ralph and
Louise are currently working on designing a self-guided tour of the museum. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated. Heidi Porter volunteered to help make signage for the exhibits and
rooms. A motion was made by Tambria Read that the Society pays for the membership dues for Frankie Lamaskas since she has become involved with helping out at the Jail House. The motion was seconded and
passed.
Dewees House:
There has been a change in the date set to decorate the house for Christmas. Because of an upcoming event, November 30th is now the date. Please come out and help if you can. “Fun” starts at 9:00 am sharp under the direction of Nancy and lunch will be provided. The next big event at the house is the Wilson County Republican Women’s dinner. The dinner is set for December 8th and will include about 75 people! Nancy asked for all of the help she get setup and work in the kitchen. Guys need to wear white shirts and black pants. Gals white shirts and black skirts.
Trustee’s Report / Historical Commission: Gene Mackle reported the casting is done for the new plaque to displayed at the Dewees House. The next step is for Harry to paint
it. Once the plaque is complete, a dedication ceremony will be set up. Gene informed everyone that there was no word from the Trustees.
Southerland Springs:
Our favorite Southerland Springs resident, Tambria Read, let everyone know that there will be barbeque sale on December 7th to benefit the the SS Historical Museum. The food will be catered by Wittes BBQ. Come out and enjoy some great food and see the new doors on the Museum. These beautiful doors are from the early 1900’s and are believed to have originally been part of a Stockdale business.
Old Business: The
historical marker plaque for the Dewees house is in the final stage. It should be ready somewhere around the first of January.
As always, help is really needed for the Jail House Museum. The idea was presented that a Director is needed. Ralph
Gerhardt once again stepped forwarded and offered to take the challenge of running the museum. A motion was made and seconded to officially make Ralph the Director.
New Business:
On a sad note, there will be no pony express this year. However, the Trail Riders want to do a short express ride up and down the corridor. The idea is to use the ponies to deliver mail between pen pals
and schools down the corridor. The Trail Riders will get with LaJuana with more details. Next year is the 150 anniversary of the pony express. Currently, plans are in work to start at
Floresville and end in Goliad.
The first Saturday in December will be the Christmas Festival of Lights and Parade in Floresville. Everyone is encouraged to come
out and enjoy the festivities!
January 3 is the official kick-off of the sesquicentennial year. Floresville High School cafeteria will host the Faith of Our
Fathers gathering from 2:30 until 4:30. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume. Our help is needed make this event a great success. Opportunities to lend a hand include helping with parking and
serving food along with the American Legion. Buckner Fanning will be the key note speaker and bag pipers will escort the leaders into the ceremony. Be sure to look for flyers that will be coming in
December. This sounds like an event not to be missed! Count on lots of music and singing and a great time.
This month’s door prize was won by Carl Ray! Of course being a “winner” means Carl has to bring the next door
prize.
Please don’t forget that there will not be regular meeting in December. The December meeting will be replaced by our annual
Christmas dinner at the Dewees house. Please bring a dish to pass and your hunger. We all look forward to seeing everyone and celebrating Christmas in style.
A motion made and carried to adjourn the meeting. This month’s tasty snacks were courtesy of Melba Dunn.
