WILSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING MINUTES OF 19 JANUARY 2010

Members in attendance:  Harry Grove, LaJuana and Norm Leus, Ray Porter, Shirley and John Grammer, Viola and Otto Henke, Tambria Read, Al and Janice Pruitt, Frank Hayden, Mary Ann Gerhardt, Al and Elaine Kolodziej, Maureen Liles, Carl Ray, Phil and Louise Thurman, Marvin and Alene Quinney, Don Manen and Gene “Mr. Wilson County History” Maeckel.

President Harry Grove not only called the meeting to order, but also led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.  A stirring prayer was offered by Frank Hayden.

Since the normal December meeting was replace by the Society’s annual Christmas party, the minutes from the November meeting were read aloud by secretary Ray Porter.  Minor corrections were suggested and made.  A motion to accept the minutes, as corrected, was made by Otto Henke, seconded and carried by a vote.

Treasurer’s Report:  Treasurer Roy Munro was not in attendance but being the thorough treasurer, ensured copies of the financial reports covering November and December were available for the meeting.  LaJuana passed out copies and went over the reports.  It was discovered that the ending balance from the November report did not carry forward as the beginning balance for December.  Since Roy was not available to make the necessary correction, LaJuana made a motion to table accepting the Treasurer’s Reports until the February meeting.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Jailhouse Museum:    Louise Thurman reported she was contacted on 16 January by some folks wanting to tour the Jailhouse.  It turns out the visitors were from the Karnes family; descendants of the former sheriff who once lived in the Jailhouse!  The group was so grateful for the opportunity to take the tour, they graciously donated $70!  As always, there is a need for help at the Jailhouse.  Ralph and Louise will host a “hanging” party at the museum on Saturday, 30 January at 10:00 am.  Ralph’s “hanging” party is not what you may think.  The party will involve hanging pictures in the museum.  Mary Ann passed around a sign-up sheet seeking volunteers to help out.  If at all possible, please try to lend a hand.  Parties are always better when lots of folks attend!

Dewees House:  Nancy Traeger is out of town and obviously unable to attend the January meeting.  Before leaving, she called LaJuana and passed on information about the Dewees house.  Nancy reported there in not much happening at the house until March.  She is still looking for someone to take a look at the windows.  If you remember, the last heavy rains leaked in around the windows due to their poor condition.  On a more positive note, Gene reported that the 2 flag poles purchased for the house are there and ready to be installed.

Trustee’s Report / Historical Commission:  Gene Maeckel reported he has not heard from the trustees in a while.  However, the monthly funds from the trustees were received.

Sutherland Springs:  Tambria Read reported the Sutherland Springs museum has 2 new doors which were once part of a Stockdale business in the early 1900’s.  Carpentry help is really needed to install the doors. If anyone knows of someone with the skill, please contact Tambria.  The 2nd Saturday of each month there will be an event in Sutherland Springs.  Great local music will be featured each month, February through May.

Following Tambria’s report, Harry introduced guest Don Manen.  Don has been living in Wilson County for the past 11 years and is interested in joining.  Lucky for us, it turns out Don used to build houses and is willing to help out with Dewees house!

Old Business:  Following the tremendous success of the Faith of Our Fathers event, LaJuana awarded sesquicentennial pins to all of those who helped out.

New Business:  As everyone knows, the Wilson County Sesquicentennial is rapidly approaching.  LaJuana passed out invitations to the county’s 150th birthday party.  The party will be Saturday, February 13th at the Floresville High School cafeteria.  Viola Henke and Tamria Read showed a terrific looking model centerpiece that will be on each table for the celebration.  Help is of course needed to set up the cafeteria and of course clean up afterwards.  Setup will being on Friday, February 12th at 5:00 pm in the Floresville High School cafeteria.  Please contact LaJuana if you would like to lend a hand.  Let’s all make this historical event for our community truly memorable!  LaJuana asked everyone to help spread the word about the “Beards and Bonnets” contest.  The search is still on for Wilson County residents who are over 100 years old.  These folks will be honored at the sesquicentennial party.

The snack schedule still shows July and August are still available.  If you would like to sign up for either month, please let us know.

Harry let everyone know that the new plaque for the Dewees house is about a month away from being ready to install the house.  He would like to set up a formal dedication ceremony and invite the trustees.  There will more to come on this topic at the next meeting in February.

Shirley Grammer informed everyone that she got a call about the poor state of the Polly Mansion.  There is quite a bit of trash and junk scattered around the property.  Even though it is a historic place, a property owner can do whatever they want if there is no federal money attached.  Tambria put forth the idea that Edmond Baker, the Health and Safety Inspector for Wilson County could inspect the trash.  There has been discussion on the state of the Polly Mansion among the WCHS numerous times.   LaJuana reminded the group that we are not an enforcing agency.  LaJuana suggested that possibly a letter of concern from the WCHS written to the current owner might have an impact.

This month’s door prize was provided by Carl Ray and won by Ray Porter.  Of course, Ray will be responsible for bringing next month’s prize.

This month’s very busy meeting came to a close when Frank Hayden made the motion to adjourn.  The motion was seconded and carried.

Rayburn Porter
Secretary
