WILSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING MINUTES OF 16 February 2010

Members in attendance:  Harry Grove, LaJuana and Norm Leus, Heidi Porter, Shirley and John Grammer, Viola and Otto Henke, Tambria Read, Frank and Elsie Hayden, Mary Ann Gerhardt, Al and Elaine Kolodziej, Nancy and Paul Traeger, Marvin and Alene Quinney, Laura and Roy Munro, Gene Maekel and guest Nicki Stohr.

Secretary’s Note:  Due to a work requirement, I was unable to attend the February meeting.  I had to rely on my trusted “understudies” Laura Munro and Heidi Porter to take accurate notes for me.  Please feel free to point out any and all mistakes.

President Harry Grove called the meeting to order and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Frank Hayden delivered an opening prayer in his usual uplifting manner.

The minutes from the January meeting were distributed for all members to review.  One minor correction was noted; a member’s name was misspelled.  Laura Munro made a motion to accept the minutes, as corrected, Heidi Porter seconded it.

Treasurer’s Report:  Copies of the Treasurer’s Report were passed out by Roy Munro.  Roy went over all of the monthly expenditures and revenues.  A motion to accept the report was made by Otto Henke and seconded by Nancy Traeger.  The motion carried following a vote by the members present.

Jailhouse Museum:   Mary Ann Gerhardt reported on the success of last month’s “hanging party” at the Jail House.  Many thanks are due to the “hangers”; Tambria Read, Norm and LaJuana Leus, Heidi and Ray Porter, Ralph and Mary Ann Gerhardt and of course Louise Thurman.  In addition to getting a great deal of the pictures re-framed and hung, the living room was rearranged.  The pictures were hung in groups by subject.  For instance, the stairway now has all livestock photos.  Tambria asked if anyone had a transportation photo.  It seems there is a need for one to complete the transportation wall.  Be sure to stop by the Jail House and see the new look.

Dewees House:  Nancy Traeger was pleased to report that the new sheetrock is up in the living room!  Next week the first coat of paint goes on.  She was very pleased with the great work done by the painters.  The much needed work on the windows has begun.  Unfortunately, the frames are in worst shape than previously thought.  Currently there are no activities booked for the house until the second Saturday in March.  It’s time again for a large dose of yard work at the house.  Nancy passed around a sign-up sheet seeking volunteers.  Who doesn’t want to labor in the yard under the watchful eye of Mrs Traeger????  The 10th of March was set as the date for a much needed indoor cleanup.  Please let Nancy know if you would like to help.  We are hoping to host the Board of Trustees at the Remschel House on the 4th, 5th or 6th of May for lunch.  Hopefully we can dedicate the new flag pole and the plaque during their visit.

Trustee’s Report / Historical Commission:  Gene Maeckel reported the monthly funds from the trustees were received.

Sutherland Springs:  Tambria Read reported the Sutherland Springs museum is coming along quite nicely.  She reminded everyone that the 6th of March is the 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff Jamboree.  The event will raise additional funds to help with renovating the museum.  Don’t forget the 2nd Saturday of March is the Music Jamboree.

FairviewEveryone’s favorite Fairview resident, Frank Hayden, reported the area is wet.  According to Frank, it has been at least 5 years since they have seen such rain!

PothIt seems there is dissention in Poth.  Gene Maeckel filled in the group on a conceptual plan drawn up by University of Texas students for the downtown area.  Apparently most local residents did not like the plan presented.  Obviously, more to come as the “War Over Plans” develops.

Old Business:  Roy Munro reminded everyone that it’s time again to pay membership dues.  No one wants to wind up on delinquent list….

New Business:  Gene stated that our group really needs to have a webmaster.  He routinely hears from folks that our website is not updated.  Roy “I have a ton of spare time” Munro volunteered to coordinate with Elaine to design a template that is easy to maintain.  We will still need someone to be responsible for maintaining the site.

New member, Nicki Stohr, would like to catalog photos at the local library.  Gene was thrilled and stated it would be a big step forward for the archive files.  We simply need to bring photos to the library and they will scan them.

This month’s door prize was won by Viola Henke, so she gets to bring next month’s prize.

Following a motion to adjourn, everyone enjoyed the snacks provided by Viola Henke and Tambria Read.

Rayburn Porter
Secretary
